THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
THE PRODUCTION PROCESS
What is key to obtaining a high quality omega-3 oil?
Norway is well-known for high quality fish products. This quality is recognised in our omega-3 oil which is a completely Norwegian product, produced in Norway from Norwegian raw material.
It is the production process that is key to a quality omega-3 oil. As a producer of quality products we consider fresh raw material to be a basic requirement. Raw material that has a short way from catch area to the production process can be processed into high-freshness oils with low oxidation levels.
Our requirement is that the cod livers that the oil is extracted from comes from fresh cod caught by the coastal fleet in the areas of Vesterålen, Lofoten and Senja in Northern Norway. The fish should only come from MSC approved fisheries. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an eco-label for fish and seafood products that guarantees that the product comes from sustainable fishing. This means that fishing must occur at a level where fishing can continue indefinitely and the fish population can remain productive and healthy with minimal impact on other species and life environments in the ecosystem.
Why is our omega-3 oil of such excellent quality?
It is not sufficient to have access to fish and liver of the freshest and highest quality. The refining process is a particularly important process in the manufacture of high quality cod liver oil. Even the highest quality raw material can be spoilt in the process because the cod liver oil is a highly volatile raw material due to the fact that the oil contains significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are the most unsaturated fatty acids known. Therefore they oxidize easily when exposed to oxygen. However, the unstable property of the oil is also the reason it is so healthy.
The use of modern technology in the production process is not enough
A gentle refining in an airtight process makes the oil more stable against oxidation. We obtain an oil with very low water content (below 0.1%). This prevents the growth of microorganisms which can reduce the quality of the oil. In the manufacturing process, modern technology ensures gentle processing of the raw materials, but it is the human knowledge and experience of proper adaptation of antioxidants that stabilize the oil. This process requires a high degree of expertise and detailed knowledge of the composition of the oil. The oil recovered varies in composition as a result of the fish being affected by the conditions under which it lives. Access to food, conditions at the time of fishing and water temperatures affect the cod. Therefore, each refining requires careful adaptation of antioxidants so that it adapts to the composition of the oil and stabilizes it to its full potential.
From raw material to finished product in the same production plant
The entire production process from raw material to crude oil to finished product ready for bottling takes place in the same production plant. This increases the detailed knowledge of each batch of omega-3 oil throughout all stages of production. This provides the best conditions possible to stabilize the oil from oxidation. Fewer handlings have a further positive effect on quality by reducing the exposure of the oil to light and air.
In our refined natural cod liver oil, the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are available as triglycerides as they are in fresh fish.
Our omega-3 oil is classified as a dietary supplement. The production process and bottling facilities are HACCAP and ISO certified. The finished product is always analysed by an independent research institute. In general such analysis is performed by Eurofins in Germany.
In addition to the regular quality testing at an independent laboratory the omega-3 oil from Arctic Superhealth is certified by Informed-Sport. This is a globally recognized ISO certified quality assurance program for analysing sports nutrition. All manufacturing processes are carefully controlled in addition to control of the products. This is a certification that makes it safer for athletes to ensure that the supplements do not contain banned substances. Professional athletes are required to check that the batch number of the product they consume is listed with Informed-Sport.
